September 24, 2002 - Honeywell Settles Asbestos Lawsuits

Honeywell International has reached out-of-court settlements for undisclosed terms with plaintiffs who claimed in a West Virginia lawsuit that their health problems were linked to asbestos exposure.

Michael Holland, a company spokesman, declined to comment Tuesday on how many claims were involved in the suit. He also would not provide details on the settlements, saying only that all cases related to the suit had either been resolved or dismissed by Sept. 16.

The maker of aerospace, automotive and other high-tech products was one of several firms named in a lawsuit going to trial this week, starting with jury selection.

Honeywell was among the defendants because some of its products, including brake linings made by its Bendix Corp. subsidiary, once contained asbestos.

The mineral was widely used as an insulator and fire retardant until its link to a type of lung cancer was discovered.

The West Virginia case involves about 8,000 asbestos claims against 250 defendants, including companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. and Owens-Illinois Inc. Settlement talks on Monday whittled down the number of defendants to less than two dozen.

Honeywell still faces other asbestos-related suits outside West Virginia, including tens of thousands of claims related to the Bendix unit and to a bankrupt Honeywell business that once made high-temperature
