June 16, 2004 - Ohio company president indicted for allegedly removed asbestos illegally
The President of Nelson Bedding Products, a Youngstown, Ohio company, was indicted for allegedly removing asbestos illegally, in addition to improperly disposing of the removed asbestos. When the removal of asbestos from the Nelson building basement allegedly occurred, the plant was in operation and employees were working throughout the building. The improper removal of asbestos allowed employees to become exposed to the airborne fibers.
Asbestos inhalation can cause lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer of the chest and abdominal cavities. There is no cure for mesothelioma and the most recent mesothelioma treatment drug only extends a life expectancy for several months when used in combination with chemotherapy. The Cleveland Area Office of EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, and the Mahoning/Trumbull Country Air Pollution Control Agency investigated the Nelson case.
